Put some Zing in your step!

when did we get so low on energy?

A client of mine is involved in the food produce industry and she is able to get things onto shelves in big chain supermarkets. She recently returned from the worlds biggest food trade fair in Germany where over 2000 people exhibited their products.

 

She told me that over the past few years she has noticed a growing trend in the industry towards energy drinks. At this fair in particular an entire floor was dedicated to these products featuring attractive girls with skimp underwear and big beaming energetic smiles to push their products (I already have my ticket booked for next year!)

 

The first energy drink on the market was Lucozade, invented by a chemist in 1927 as a product to aid recovery in sick patients in hospital. It wasn’t until 1984 that the product would go mainstream with athletic endorsement from the likes of Daley Thompson and adverts featuring music from Iron Maiden. Over the next few years others appeared on the market with promises to perk you up and put a spring in your step.

 

All of this got me to thinking, how did we get so knackered in the first place? And also, if energy drinks are the answer to this problem, then why do we need to keep inventing more and more of them?.

 

My personal belief is that over the last few decades we have become more and more knackered through our lifestyle and bad habits, we have more time on our hands now thanks to the energy saving devices we have invented, but now with more time on our hands there seems to be more urgency to get things done faster, deadlines move closer and demands increase and as we try to keep up we tire ourselves out.

 

Here then, barring any actual thyroid problem or other disorder, are my 5 top tips to put a perk in your step, they are simple and easy, implementing them however is another thing!

 

Tips to get more energy 1- Sleep!

 

Bad things start to happen when we miss out on sleep. We become less focused, more irritable and through various mechanisms we become more likely to put on more bodyfat. If you have ever gone to bed very early and just felt how amazingly energetic you felt the next morning then you know what I am talking about.

 

The problems of getting more sleep such as those who can’t get to sleep, those who wake up often etc warrant me putting together an article on this in the future. For now I just suggest 5 things

 

1)      Make your room pitch black- any light can disrupt your body.

2)      Have naps in the day if you are in sleep debt.

3)      Avoid food 2 hours before bed

4)      Have a warm bath 1 hour before bed

5)      Avoid entertainment that gets you excited such as action films, etc, try to use the final hours of you waking day to relax and unwind.

 

Tips to get more energy 2- Alkalize!

 

Many of us are lacking in energy because we are so overly acidic (generally speaking).  The main causes of acidity are a lack of green veg, too much and too poor protein choices, and believe it or not but many people believe a negative mindset also causes a chemical cascade which causes the body to become further acidic.

 

To combat this I recommend eating plenty of veg, in fact stacks of it. More is better!!  If you aim to eat some every time you eat then you will most likely cover your bases, so some at breakfast, some as a snack and so on throughout the day will give you more energy. Tips to get more energy 3- change your attitude!

 

Much of our lack of energy comes from our own negative beliefs and behaviours. Spending so much time hating other people causes you more harm than it does them, similarly spending so much time getting overwhelmed by life instead of just going with the flow will ensure you get drowned in your own sorrows. So try to go on a journey of self improvement, there are many good books on this and reading them or listening to cds can only enlighten you, my personal  facvourite is the success principles by Jack Canfield.

 

Tips to get more energy 4- exercise!

 

You want more energy you gotta give some! This applies to everything we want, if you want more time then give some of your own time, more money then give some of your own money. Doing so gives yourself an affirmative message that you have some to give away, it empowers you to get more of what you want. Plus there are numerous studies showing how exrercise helps combat depression, it simply eleavates your feel good chemicals so go out there and get moving, don’t forget to have fun as well!!

 

Tips to get more energy 5- Eat energy foods!

 

This is a very individual and unique thing, but a sure sign that food is no good for you is if you eat it and feel tired within the hour. Most unhealthy foods will make you feel tired but some people even have reactions to good food, I have a friend who swears he feels drowsy and sluggish after eating red peppers or apples! Both of which are healthy foods but just seem to cause him upset.

 

So there we have it, a brief guide to getting more energy, in this crazy go getting world it is important to take time out for ourselves, more often than not we are trying to be all that we can but just running out of fuel too quickly.
